Black Friday 2008

AT&T Selling iPhone For $99

AT&T (T) on Saturday began offering refurbished iPhones for the lowest price yet seen in the United States:

  • $99 for a black 8GB iPhone 3G (refurbished)
  • $199 for a black 16 GB iPhone 3G (refurbished)
  • For several weeks before Christmas, Apple (AAPL) blogs were buzzing with rumors that Walmart would be selling a new version of Apple’s iPhone at the magical $99 price. Currenlty, Walmart is still selling them at $197 for a $2 discount.

AT&TS’s $99 iPhones are the same old models, slightly used.

According to the small print on att.com,

Refurbished phones are previously owned devices that have been unused or lightly used and returned during the 30-day trial period. Each refurbished phone is independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards. Some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches.

Refurbished iPhone 3G devices carry a warranty of 90 days or more. For details about the warranty on your refurbished iPhone 3G go to www.apple.com/support/oss/.

The catch? The heavily discounted phones come with the usual 2-year contracts, which can cost up to $2,000, depending on the plan.

The sale ends Dec. 31 or when AT&T runs out of stock, whichever comes first.

    Walmart Starts Selling IPhone Today

Wal-Mart is rolling out sales of the iPhone 3G this weekend for a whopping $2 discount. Wal-Mart will offer the 8GB iPhone 3G for $197 and the 16GB model for $297. Customers are still required the same two-year service contract. In response, Best Buy is currently offering the iPhone 3G models for $189.99 and $289.99 — seven bucks less than Wal-Mart’s “always low prices.”

Now, to be fair, Wal-Mart does promise to match any local store’s advertised store price, so if you remember to bring in a printed Best Buy ad, you can get the lower price. Still, for a chain famous for having cheap stuff, it’s surprising Wal-Mart isn’t dropping its own price from the start — particularly when you consider the recent $99 iPhone rumors and Wal-Mart’s own past 3G deals.

    After-Christmas Sale: Second Black Friday?

A lot of retailers are targeting the day after Christmas, Dec 26, as the second Black Friday to boost their sales. Customers can expect retailers to slash prices even more as they try to clear out their inventory before year ends. This year, whopping pre-Christmas sales have not done enough to sway shoppers to spend. They’re awaiting deeper discounts, and retailers are promising them.

“People can come in from 7 a.m. to noon and they are going to find great deals,” says Tom Aiello, a spokesman for Sears Holding, which owns Sears and Kmart. “It’s like Black Friday.”

“There’s not a lot of time for retailers to make up for what’s been lost,” says Kathy Grannis, National Retail Federation spokeswoman.

    Among offers:

Sears will offer up to 75% off on electronics and 50% off on Craftsman tool storage chests. Kmart will add 40% off to clearance items, already marked down 30%.

Toys R Us circulars in newspapers Thursday will bill the day after Christmas as the “biggest” after-holiday sale with deals including an $81.99 race car set for $19.99 and table games, originally $239.99, for $131.99.

Crate & Barrel has savings of up to 70%.

J.C. Penney stores open at 5:30 a.m. with twice as many door-buster deals as last year. Among the 100 deals: 70% off jewelry.

“People are saying, ‘Why wouldn’t I wait for another 30% off on already 50% markdowns,’ ” says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Group.

FatWallet has been a major source of hot deals posted on this website. But most people may not be aware of FatWallet’s cashback program. The way cashback program works is if you go through FatWallet’s link to certain store’s website, you will be entitled to a cashback amount equal to X% of your purchase. How can FatWallet afford to do this?

FatWallet.com earns commissions on purchases members make through our Cash Back eligible merchants and we share part of our commission with the member. Why? Because when we share, we win!

I have personally used the cashback program many times. There were a couple times where the system didn’t automatically record my purchase and I had to submit a support ticket to FatWallet. But, their staffs have been extremely helpful. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple To Cut Prices On Black Friday

Even the most successful consumer products are going on sale this Black Friday. Apple.com has just announced an one-day sale this Friday. There’s no telling of how much savings we can expect. But Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu predicts Apple could be offering discounts of up to 15% on Macs, iPods and accessories, compared with 5%-10% in previous years. Another tip is that Apple store managers are offering to match any advertised price — a policy they quietly followed in the past but now openly acknowledge. Read the rest of this entry »
